In the year 1990, a young boy hailing from Noonmati area of Guwahati went to New Delhi for pursuing higher studies in computer education. He went to New Delhi with an aim not only to establish himself in a self-sufficient way, but in various capacities with the students’ movement led by All Assam Students Union. During those days, he witnessed the burgeoning problem of unemployment and its resultant consequences from the close quarters also to make efforts to provide for career opportunities to the needy young students.

Dipankar Dutta, then a boy, came back after doing his course successfully and established a small computer education institute, named Computer Education Centre, in the Noonmati area of Guwahati in 1994. He started the institute on May 2 in that year with only two computers. After 30 glorious years of growth and prosperity with more than 175 centres in places all over Assam, students and their guardians keep only one name in mind – CEC. It is the largest local educational institute in the North-east.

Established with an aim to create trained and efficient manpower in the field of Information Technology, Software and Hardware courses in computer, Fashion and Textile Designing, Interior Designing, Spoken English, Tourism, Journalism, Beautician CEC has successfully carried out different courses. CEC had stepped into its 32nd year of existence with a brilliant record of trained individuals who had been able to secure their lives by getting jobs or becoming self employed after completing courses at CEC. It may be mentioned that several highly-successful entrepreneurs, Govt. Officers, Executives, Bank Managers, Fashion Designers, Interior Designers, Journalists, Beauticians currently working in inside and outside the State were students of this local institute.

This is no mean achievement because even in the face of the ever-growing competition by several multinational IT education institutes, CEC has been able to sustain itself highly successfully against all odds as a local institute. Computer education giants currently working in this field in Assam have also faced competition in the face of the ever-growing popularity of CEC among the aspiring students.
One major reason behind the success achieved within this span of over two decade is the individualized attention given to the students, thus enhancing their ability to acquire and synthesize knowledge in their chosen field of studies. Another important element for the popularity of CEC courses is the economical and affordable fee structure of various courses.

CEC, is also providing a 10 per cent concession in any course to the female students as per the norms of Union Ministry of Human Resources Development.

Says Dipankar Dutta, the Founder of CEC : “Our institute has made all-out efforts to provide high quality education in a comparatively lesser cost. I think this has helped students of the economically backward families of the whole north-eastern region immensely.” The institute, it may be mentioned, also has schemes under which it has been providing free-of-cost educational courses to many poor students.

Since its inception the institute conducted various seminars and workshops, where a wide range of experts have participated and the students had benefitted from the lectures and the workshops of the invited dignitaries. CEC had also organized various shows from where a large number of fashion designing students were benefited by participating in the events of national standards.

One major dimension of the institute has been its regional role, and its teaching had attracted students from the entire Northeast region. The institute has also undertaken collaborative education by some franchisees. Currently there are over 175 CEC centres in the entire Northeast region. Now CEC is the only local largest network in education in this region.

Maintaining its claim as a centre of excellence, and to push for recognition as that No.1 in the field of technical education, the experienced workforce of CEC is still striving hard to provide the best education to the students.

CEC has given a lot to the society. It is because of CEC’s unique way of teaching that more young people have shown interest in professional and technical education. I have always maintained certain norms and values which are important for CEC’s positive image in the society. I also believe that effective communication is important as it enables you to know what the people demand from you or what better provision you can provide them with. The educational values that I propagated are strongly attached to CEC and with time more people will appreciate these values.

In a nutshell, CEC is an example of the results of sheer dedication and devotion to achieve one’s ambition to become self-sufficient. It has also aided students to prosper in their lives. After more than two decades of status and standing it has vowed to pursue the same goal with more zeal and gusto with an extremely practical and professional methodology. It’s a classic case of the rags to the richest story as exemplified by its success within this short timeframe. The institute has adopt itself to the newer technologies and is procuring and making use of those methods and practices, while not disregarding the age-old and time tested methods of the management.

A word of advice for aspiring students from the Founder President of CEC, Dipankar Dutta -
“Students should recognise their particular talent and accordingly start developing and enhancing their special aptitude for the purpose. This will not only help in bringing discipline in them but also help them to take proper decisions. Judicious use of time and opportunities, sincerity and hard work are the keys to success and every student must possess them. One should also respect the value of professionalism. It should be always remembered that money can buy a degree but it cannot buy talent. Students must develop qualities of honesty, devotion and dedication and always stay away from corrupt things that tend to hinder their path.”
